Picloram mainly acts on nucleic acid metabolism and deforms chloroplast structure and other organelles to interferes with protein synthesis. Through the rapid absorption by plant leaves and roots, epitopes are induced in sensitive plants (such as stimulating cell elongation and senescence, especially in meristematic regions), which eventually cause plant growth to stagnate and die quickly.
Picloram can be used to control annual and perennial broad-leaved weeds such as dandelion, Rumex gmelini, Rumex cristata, Rumex cirsium arvense, European thistle, jonquil, Momordica mongolica and Stellaria media. It's also very selective.
